Dual Language Program

During the design of our curriculum the question of how to teach and attain true fluency in two languages monopolized much of our attention.  We did not want a program to focus on language and neglect traditional subject matters but rather one that accomplished both tasks at once.  We worked with a specialist in dual language immersion programs for primary schools who helped us construct a program that uses instruction of traditional subjects and daily conversation to achieve fluency in the second language.  Thus we are able to help our students reach fluency in a second language without compromising academic achievement.

The main goals for these programs are for students to achieve strong levels of academic proficiency in both languages and to value cultural diversity.  Fluency in a second language better prepares students to participate in our global community, to meet the exciting challenges of society, and to develop a more acute cultural awareness.  Granada International School has embraced the 50/50 model which means all of our daily classes will be taught 50% in English and 50% in Spanish; lectures, projects, writing assignments, presentations will all be split half in English and half in Spanish.  The student’s mastery of each language will continue to grow and mature.  As we add subsequent grades, we will add an ESL instructor to facilitate the transition for older students.

Bilingual Support

Most children do not come to our school fluent in both English and Spanish.  If your child is entering First Grade or above, we feel that additional support may be needed in order to help the child succeed.

This may take the form of:

• Supporting your child at home by working from a text-book, videos, games or a computer program.
• Enrolling your child in our after school Homework Club.
• Enrolling your child in a language classes
